Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1: Assignment 7

Opportunity : Creating an app for UF students that connects students with a counselor, or “friend”, at any time.   Who:  UF students looking for mental health resources What: They are unable to utilize traditional methods Why: Personal preferences and logistical hardships make going to campus difficult   Testing the who: UF students struggle with mental health. College is hard, and the pressure to succeed is high. College is a huge adjustment for most students: campus is big, the student body is massive, and lectures are enormous. Students should have a resource that helps them with the transition.   Testing the what: Traditional on-campus resources are overextended. The wait to see someone is weeks. While not every student may feel the need for the opportunity, it’s a nice peace of mind to know that one day students can easily find help.   Testing the why: I’m not blaming the on-campus resources. I have been personally impacted by mental health and I believ...

Identifying Local Opportunities: Assignment 5

1.      “Flushed baby wipes will be a ‘big problem for us’ amid coronavirus outbreak” https://www.sun-sentinel.com/coronavirus/fl-ne-coronavirus-toilets-clogged-20200320-z4re2ynwnvep7eq6bzabaghjva-story.html This article discusses the problems that flushing baby wipes has on south Florida sewer pipes. The shortage of toilet paper has caused people to use alternative options in the restroom. In the end, there is also a list of items that should never be flushed. The lack of toilet paper is something that most of us have faced by now. Unfortunately, in south Florida, the sewer pipes are already having problems; so, the increased usage of baby wipes and paper towels is wreaking havoc on the sewer system. The public works officials are working hard to fix the problem, but it’s unlikely that the problem will fix itself overnight. 2.      “A very Florida problem: our cows are too hot” https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/florida/fl-ne-climate-hot-cows-2020...

Forming an Opportunity Belief: Assignment 4

Image
As the world begins to adjust to a post-COVID-19 society, there are going to be many new opportunities. Something that has been impactful for me, even before the pandemic, is the lack of mental health resources available to a UF student. In 2019, about 20% of students were treated or previously diagnosed with depression. Telemedicine is a huge opportunity to help students see a mental health professional faster, safer, and more efficiently. If seeing/talking to a counselor was as easy as texting or calling a friend, more students would have access to the help they need.   Prototypical Customer 1: UF student that has tried to use the current on-campus resources             This student has tried to see two different therapists on campus; both times she left unable to make a follow-up appointment. She first tried to go 3 years ago and then tried a second time 2 years ago. Not only are the on-campus resources meant to be short-te...

Your Entrepreneurship Story: Assignment 3

Image
My parents’ entrepreneurial spirits inspire me so much.  Over the last 40 years, my parents have invested in real estate in Fort Lauderdale—they own and manage eight rental properties in the heart of downtown. My mom also owns her own veterinary clinic just a few doors down from my parents’ house. My dad was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale and loves the city; but he grew up in a low-income family and didn’t go to college. My mom, on the other hand, comes from a wealthy mid-Western family and is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. They have persevered through any and all obstacles—it’s really incredible. Even at a time when women weren’t usually veterinarians and definitely didn’t own their own practices, my mom had the passion to start her own veterinary practice. My dad was not fazed by his lack of higher education; but instead, he chose to invest in the only city he’s ever called home. This summer, I enrolled in ENT3003 because I hope to capture a glimmer of their love of busines...

Bug List: Assignment 2

When guests come over and don’t remove their shoes at the front door. Why does this bug exist? It’s a cultural thing: People didn’t grow up doing it and think that wearing shoes in the house is acceptable. When people leave doors open, especially in Florida Why does this bug exist? People hold the refrigerator door open to look for food or open the front door to greet a guest. When I’m all set to start an exam and ProctorU has delays, so I start my exam about 30 minutes later than my scheduled time Why does this bug exist? With COVID-19, there is a massive increase of students required to take proctored exams online. The unexpected increase in demand causes long wait times at peak testing times. When people are driving in the rain with their hazards are on. Why does this bug exist? People believe that it helps drivers behind them see them better; however, it is illegal, and hazard lights are only meant for stopped vehicles. When I am a hostess at a restaurant, people...
