Solving the Problem: Assignment 8

The opportunity that I have selected is one that I identified in assignment 6. Climate change is causing more natural disasters and I think there should be a service that enables you to enlist the help of a worker to help you in the events leading up to a disaster. 

Living in south Florida, hurricane season is both exciting and terrifying. The preparations necessary to make sure your home is hurricane ready are numerous: do you have batteries? Do you have candles? Do you have water? Are your windows protected? Do you have gasoline? While most of the aforementioned precautions can be found on a shopping run, I think that some people would want to hire someone to wait in gasoline lines and grocery lines. Additionally, I believe that the service could also help in more physically demanding ways too. I know my family has to make sure our boat is on the trailer and safe. Other families, especially with older people, could use help to do the shopping or put up shutters.

In no way would this service replace the kindness of a friendly neighbor or, in case of emergency, first responders. I’d like to view it more as a luxury service— a short term helper specializing in prepping for natural disasters.

    Hey Chaplin,
    I think your proposed solution is great! I think that in states that deal with annual natural disasters, this can really take off amongst higher income folks that have that extra disposable income, or amongst the senior population and even senior homes that don't have the strength to take on some of those harder tasks. One challenge I see for this kind of business is that it is seasonal, so I was wondering what are ways you would make money during non-hurricane season?

    Hi Chaplin,
    In Florida, there is definitely a need for this and your solution seems like it would successfully meet these needs. Whether it is someone who physically cannot take proper measures to ensure their safety, or if someone simply does not want to bother, I can see a lot of people taking advantage of this service. It seems relatively easy to find individuals to collect supplies for users as well. I know if I were out purchasing supplies for my family, I would have no problem picking up supplies for someone else while I am out and make some extra cash. Great idea and well thought out!

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I really loved reading about your ideas, especially when it comes to hurricane season. I agree, this season can be terrifying, but with your solution, I feel as if this has potential to help so many people. I really like what you said at the end of your post about how this service would be more as a luxury rather than a replacement to those who serve us during these hard times in Florida.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2: Assignment 15

After doing my interviews, I discovered that for my opportunity that there needs to be a balance between price and quality. It needs to be a high-quality service with a reasonable price. The freshmen and sophomores that I talked to this time seemed to really value quality. Therapy isn’t a one size fits all; there are some methods that work for other people and aren’t quite as effective. The first guy I interviewed was a rising Sophomore who games a lot. He doesn’t go outside much so he prefers to order things online (via Amazon or the company’s website). Your Exit Strategy: Assignment 28

1.)     Your exit strategy is paramount to your entire entrepreneurial endeavor. The U.S. Military works backwards with planning and timing so starting with your exit strategy and working backwards from it can be a great way to help guide your business to its ultimate goal. For me, my exit strategy is to ultimately sell the business for a large profit. I've read Peter Thiel's Zero to One  and in that book, he explains that the time to sell your project is when you are completely out of ideas to innovate. For me, that is my goal as well. 2.)     I believe that getting all of my ideas and innovation into my business is a great way for me to leave the project feeling complete.
